About us

On 13th June 2004, a group of Sri Lankans in Wellington met to form the Sri Lanka Association of New Zealand (SLANZ) Inc. The creation of this voluntary society was aimed at primarily to serve and promote the cultural, aesthetic and artistic aspirations of our vibrant community in Wellington. The Association gained ?Charitable Status? in 2006.

SLANZ is not a political organization. The objectives of the Association are to foster, facilitate and promote the development of cultural values and traditions of our motherland, Sri Lanka. SLANZ is committed to raising the awareness of the younger Sri Lankan generation of the value of our rich 2500 year old cultural heritage of the motherland and to educate them to project and generate the glory and grandeur among Sri Lankan and New Zealand communities.

We see ourselves as being complementary to each and every Sri Lankan association and society in New Zealand. As exponents of most aspects of Sri Lankan culture we form a ?Centre of Excellence?.

There are some dedicated artistes of musical, dancing and histrionic talents under whose tutelage Sri Lankan children have gained skills in various forms of aesthetic disciplines. They form an important part of our Association.

Members of the Association include talented costume designers, choreographers, make-up artistes, script writers, skilled stage-craft technicians and people with extensive managerial experience. They work along side our artistes and musicians.

We invite all Sri Lankan cultural groups of similar interests to join us.

The Association acknowledges with gratitude the support and encouragement it received from the following organisations for its Cultural Development Programme.

  • New Zealand Lottery Grants Board - Cultural Development Workshop Projects.
  • Asia: New Zealand Foundation - Workshop Training in the art of "Traditional Drumming" and production of dramas.
  • Pub Charity - Financial support for training in the art of playing the Tabla Drum.
  • Wellington City Council - support for production of a Tele Drama and training in Guitar.
  • Winton & Margaret Bear Trust - Assistance for the "Drumming Orchestra".
  • Trust House Charitable Trust - Support to facilitate drama production.
  • Lower Hutt City Council - Assistance to produce a Tele Drama and Workshop training in the art of playing musical instruments.
